ASEAN Working Group on Environmentally Sustainable Cities

The ASEAN Working Group on Environmentally Sustainable Cities (AWGESC), chaired by Singapore and comprises all ASEAN member countries, was formed in June 2003 to drive the initiative on Environmentally Sustainable Cities in ASEAN. Air Quality Management Activities under ESC A Framework for Environmentally Sustainable Cities in ASEAN – Clean Air, comprising a set of comprehensive policies, strategies and programmes/activities, has been developed to offer implementation approaches through a set of best practices based on the lessons and experiences of ASEAN member countries. The AWGESC will organize a seminar to familiarize the participating cities with the Framework, as well as help them identify capacity needs and technical assistance they require to implement the Framework. A list of best practices in air quality management within and beyond the region will be compiled. The information will be made available to all city mayors and officials on a website. The AWGESC also plans to organize a workshop on Clean Air to provide technical assistance to ASEAN city managers in developing their masterplans and incorporate relevant best practices in their respective cities to address specific areas of concern. Training courses on air quality management will also be conducted to help ASEAN city managers develop the expertise to implement their masterplans.
